City of Trail Receives $200,000 Provincial Grant to Modernize Development Application Processes
The City of Trail has received $200,000 through the Local Government Development Approvals Program, administered by the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) and funded by the Province of British Columbia.
The funding will help the City make development, subdivision, and building applications easier to understand and navigate for residents, builders, developers, and housing providers. The initiative aims to improve customer service, provide clearer information, and create a more predictable application experience while supporting future housing development in the community.
As part of the project, the City will create new public resources, including application checklists, process maps, and user-friendly guidance materials. These tools will help applicants better understand submission requirements, approval steps, and project timelines before they apply.
The project will also include a comprehensive review of the City’s Subdivision Regulation Bylaw (Bylaw No. 1988, 1984) to evaluate servicing standards, frontage improvement requirements, and subdivision procedures. The goal is to improve clarity and consistency while ensuring municipal requirements remain practical and transparent.
In addition, the City will work with local builders, housing providers, and regional partners to identify opportunities to streamline processes, improve the applicant experience, and support timely housing development. Feedback gathered through this work will help shape future improvements and encourage greater consistency.
The initiative will support the continued development of the City’s Planning Department and future Building Department, which is anticipated to be brought in-house in November 2026. New resources developed through the project will be integrated into the City’s website, providing residents and industry professionals with easier access to information and application requirements.
Once complete, the project will help create a more transparent, efficient, and user-friendly development review system. These improvements will support the implementation of the City’s upcoming Official Community Plan, enhance customer service, and help residents, businesses, and housing providers navigate municipal processes with greater confidence.
