McBride Street and Fifth Avenue Water and Sewer upgrades

In March 2024, a significant watermain break in the 2200 Block of Fifth Avenue exposed multiple failing water valves, which prolonged service disruptions and expanded impacts across Shaver’s Bench and Miral Heights. The City has advanced a coordinated infrastructure renewal project, including the installation of new valves, and expanded the project scope to address both aging water and sanitary sewer systems. These upgrades will:

  • Reduce the risk of watermain breaks and sewer failures
  • Improve system reliability for residents

  • Improve hydraulic capacity for fire hydrant flow

  • Supports long-term infrastructure sustainability

Residents may experience temporary traffic disruptions, limited access, and short-term water service interruptions during construction. Advance notice will be provided where possible.

Underground utility upgrades are scheduled throughout June and July on Fifth Ave and the McBride St intersection, followed by work on McBride St Lane in August and surface restorations at all sites.

There will be ongoing road closures during the construction period. For the first portion of the project, Fifth Avenue, from the intersection with Fifth Avenue Hill to McBride Street, will be closed.

Areas will be open to local traffic only as necessary. Please obey all traffic control signage

1200 Block Dewdney AveNue rebuild

This project was initiated by stormwater runoff and drainage issues, resulting in water from the lane infiltrating the adjacent underground parkade. The City took this opportunity to improve and replace the aging infrastructure in the lane at the same time as correcting the water issue in the parkade. The project scope includes new water, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer connections with improved lane grading along the 1200 Block to ensure surface water is properly managed.

The project commenced on May 25, 2026 and is expected to be completed at the end of August.

Vehicle and pedestrian access to the 1200 Block of Dewdney Avenue and laneway parking will be eliminated for the duration of construction. Road closure of the half-block of Eldorado Street adjacent to Tailout Brewing is planned for the duration of construction. The Fortis building parking lot access from Eldorado Street will be maintained. Intermittent road closures to the Fortis parkade access on Farwell Street are anticipated. Emergency personnel will always be able to access all businesses during construction, and emergency egress to the Dewdney Avenue laneway will be ensured.
