Garbage and Recycling

Curbside garbage collection

The City of Trail, through a contractor, operates a weekly garbage collection for all households and some commercial businesses in Trail for an annual fee. Please ensure you are following the procedures, outlined in the City's garbage bylaw.

• All garbage should be placed for pick up by 8 AM on your collection day.
• Two bags or two containers of garbage per parcel of land per week is the limit. Each container can be up to 95 liters, but must not weigh more than 25kg (50 lbs) each when full. Bags have the same weight limit. If bags or contents of containers exceed this weight limit, the driver will tag the bag and not collect it.
• Additional bags may be purchased at City Hall for $4/bag to increase the amount of garbage that can be collected.
• All garbage must be bagged, even if placed in garbage cans. Unbagged garbage will not be collected. 
• Be Bear Aware during bear season (spring through fall) - Keep your garbage in a secure area until the morning of your collection day.   

• All garbage pick-up related questions must be directed to the contractor, GFL Environmental, directly at 250-367-0099.

• Stay healthy and take preventative measures to stop the spread of COVID-19 - All garbage must be bagged, even if placed in garbage cans.  Unbagged garbage will not be collected. 
• Be Bear Aware - Keep your garbage in a secure area until the morning of your collection day.

Recycle BC is responsible for residential recycling for the City of Trail and operates this program through a local contractor.

• For information on how the program works, visit the Recycle BC website at www.recyclebc.ca for information as to what can be recycled curb side and what needs to be brought to a depot.  There is also an address search tool where you can easily determine your collection schedule.
• To obtain recycling bags or blue boxes, please contact GFL Environmental at 250-367-0099 and they would be happy to deliver directly to your door.

Landfill 

Major appliance recycling

• As of May 1, 2019 there is no charge for recycling some Major Appliances at RDKB landfills and transfer stations. 
• The RDKB has partnered with the Major Appliances Recycling Roundtable (MARR) to be a depot for their regulated products.  These include: Stoves, Dishwashers, Clothing Dryers, Washing Machines, Built-in Range Hoods & Microwaves, Installed Cooking Surfaces and Waters Dispensers, Trash Compactors and Garburators. 
• Appliances that contain Ozone Depleting Substances (fridges, freezers, coolers, air conditioners) are not accepted a the McKelvey Creek Landfill and must be taken to Tervita at the Waneta Industrial Park.  Read more details here.
