Property Taxes

Annual property taxes

  • The City of Trail issues annual Property Tax Notices via Canada Post around the third week of May of each year.
  • The due date for payment of property taxes is on or before July 2 except when July 2 falls on a weekend in a calendar year in which case the due date is the next business date.

A 10% penalty is applied on unpaid taxes and unclaimed Home Owner Grant amounts after the tax due date. Interest on arrears and delinquent amounts owing is calculated to July 2 of that taxation year. Penalties are mandated by Provincial legislation and Municipal Staff do not have the discretion to waive, or reduce them.

Property Tax Payments

  • Pay online through your banking institution
  • Pay at Trail City Hall – the City accepts cash, cheque, debit card, Mastercard and Visa (a 2.4% service charge will be added to credit card payments). Open Monday to Friday 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM at 1394 Pine Avenue downtown Trail. Closed weekends and statutory holidays.
  • Credit card payments can be made online with a convenience fee of 2.4%.

Pre-authorized Payment Plan (PAP)

  • The City of Trail property tax PAP allows you to make 10 monthly instalments towards your property taxes.
  • Starting each August, the pre-authorized amount will be withdrawn directly from your bank account on the 15th of each month. When property taxes are billed in the following May, your credit balance will offset the amount outstanding. It will be your responsibility to ensure the balance is paid in full by the due date.
  • To apply for the PAP, please download and fill out the authorization form (click here for fillable PDF) or visit City Hall.

Property owners are responsible for ensuring that property taxes are paid on time. Advertising is placed in eNews and other online platforms alerting property owners that Property Tax notices have been mailed and advising that they should contact City Hall if not received.

Home Owner Grant Information

  • If you are eligible for a Home Owner Grant (HOG), you must claim your HOG through the Province of British Columbia online, by phone, or at a BC Services Office.

  • In order to avoid penalties and interest, apply on or before the tax due date.

  • Learn more or claim your Home Owner Grant at www.gov.bc.ca/homeownergrant or phone 1-888-355-2700 to speak with a live agent.
