September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to honour the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities.
Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process. An all-ages event to reflect, learn, engage, and take action will be held on this day at the Trail Riverfront Centre from 11 am to 2 pm.
September 30 is also Orange Shirt Day - an Indigenous-led grassroots commemorative day intended to raise awareness of the individual, family and community inter-generational impacts of residential schools, and to promote the concept of “Every Child Matters”. The orange shirt is a symbol of the stripping away of culture, freedom and self-esteem experienced by Indigenous children over generations. We encourage everyone to wear orange to show their support.
Hosted by:
City of Trail, Trail & District Public Library, Trail Museum & Archives, VISAC Gallery, Trail & District Arts Council, Teck Trail Operations, USW Local 480, Kootenay South Metis, Blood of Life Collective, Sn̓ʕaýckstx Confederacy and the Trail Royal Theatre.
We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, September 30.
